With the SJ4000 if you use any resolution higher than the native 1080p, the image quality suffers tremendously.Īlso, the battery is the same, as are all the mounts and accessories with the only exception being the waterproof housing has three buttons on the side instead of just two.

Whichever model of SJ5000 you choose, it should take significantly better still pics than the SJ4000, because the Panasonic sensors should allow for true 14 and 16mp resolution instead of the SJ4000 1080p resolution upscaled. No one has reported it yet, but it's assumed that since it's using the old Novatek chip that it will not offer true 60fps just like the SJ4000 didn't (they just double the 30fps). Then there's the "SJ5000 Wifi" and the "SJ5000", both having the Novatek 96655 chip with the 14mp Panasonic MN34110PA sensor and the 2" screen I mentioned. The "SJ5000 Plus" has the Ambarella A7LS75 chip with a 16mp Panasonic MN34120PA sensor with Wifi and supposedly does true 1080p 60fps (not just 30fps doubled like previous models). Hopefully, the new camera will work with the extra stuff that comes with the 4000.always nice to have backup batteries, waterproof housing, etc.Īctually, there are three different models of SJ5000. Since I have the 4000, I will wait till people have had the 5000 for a while, and then read their feedback. Per that website, it's a 1.5" LCD, not 2." I mostly get my "still shots" from video captures, as I usually just record video on it rather than wasting time with still photos and video.

Incidentally, I've had an original (non-Wifi) SJ4000 for a while now myself - I use it regularly for kayak fishing, but also use it as an all-around happy-snap camera on family vacations. The easiest way to figure out what's a real SJ camera and what's not is by their relatively new website: MSRP for the SJ5000 Wifi version seems to be at just under US$200. It looks exactly like the SJ4000, but it boasts a larger sensor made by Panasonic and a 2" LCD. Actually, the official SJ5000 from SJCAM is about to be released any day now.
